    This history is taken from the personal writings of Abbie Barker Pyne.

    Born Wed Apr 2 1924, Elba, Idaho in the big brick house north & just east of the Elba Park. The house was called the 'Savage Place'. 4th Child & 3rd daughter of John Edmund Barker & Teggie Harriet Ottley, Both were children of Elba Pioneer parents.

    Dad had a buggy w/a white fringed top which he courted my mother

    First Car I believe was a 1924 Ford Model T Roadster w/a cloth top & side curtains. Top & Curtains didn't last as long as the car.

    Moved to Jerome Sun 10 Apr 1927. My Dad bought 120 acres. 4 mi N & 3 mi West. We had the first good registered Holstein Dairy Herd in Jerome. It was the 'Taft Place'.

    Dad died Thur 30 Mar 1933 & buried on my 9th Birthday. Sun 2 Apr 1933

    1st - 4th grade 1930 at Appleton School 6 mi west of Jerome. 1st & 2 Bruckner 3rd Anderson Appleton was in Gooding District

    Tonsils out in Wendell Hospital first of year - Dr Schmershall The smell of cigars - ugh!

    Polio in 1st grade and Rheumatic fever & St Vitus Dance in 2nd grade

    Elda cut my leg w/hoe & severed part of achilles tendon

    Moms Bros brought logs on 1 truck to build a new home 30x30 Had a house warming & all kids got exposed to Measles

    1934 moved across the road so changed to the Jerome School District

    Mom had tin can Canner & Cooker & she canned all our winter food. Our grain went to the mill so we had flour & cereal and from milk to the Creamery we got cheese & butter. Sometimes we ran out of fruit & vegetables (canned) before the new crop but we still had milk & grain products & never felt we were

    5 - 6 & part of 7th at Pleasant Plains from Jerome it was 6 Mi north

    Last of 8th grade moved to town but finished School at Pleasant Plains and graduated in town w/PP-Canyonside-SugarLoaf all graduating together All girls wore a white dotted swiss dress, all alike and cost $1.98 from JCPenney's.

    1937-1941 I picked potatoes, thinned beets, hoed beets & beans w/mother from Wendell to Kasota - We could pick 100 sacks per day in good spuds.

    Moved to 228 3rd Ave E. Art married Fri 20 June 1941 to Emma Anna Smith Mother , Iola & I moved into Small house on back of Lot


    Graduation in May 1941 from Jerome High in only 3 years instead of 4 years I got all credits


    Married Leo Vincent Pyne Sun 12 Oct 1941 by Bp A Les Olsen at home & moved to Boise same day. Leo was working for AT&T - Mother gave each a cow - We bought a homemade trailer house money


    Job ended 2 weeks later - & back to Jerome & put trailer in NS Canal Co yard until Nov


    Went to work at Sun Valley Nov 1941 thru Mar 1942 a very cold winter (to -40) & lots of snow. Got my SS card 720-03-8977 from UPRR out of Omaha Neb.


    April 1941 moved to Husum (BZ Corners) Wn Leo worked cutting large timber for firewood for George Carr, son of Grandma Katherine Pyne. 2nd wife of William Anderson Pyne.


    July 1942 - came to Ida for my Grandfather Barker's funeral & Cal & Edna drove back w/us Cal went to work in Portland (Swan Island) Shipyards.


    15 Aug 1942 we went to Portland & Leo worked in Ship Yards.


    Got a new trailer house abt Oct 1942

    Mary-Lou born Mon 26 Apr 1943 at Hauneman Hospital Delivered by Dr Victor L Rocho

    I went to work in Shipyard Jan 1944 to Mar 1944

    Leo got Draft Notice & we moved back home to Jerome He worked for N S C Co until June when his draft transfer came thru from Wn & he left Jerome Mon 26 June 1944 for Ft Doug Ut & was inducted 27 June


    Moved trailer to back of Leo's folks lot & lived there until Leo came home Jan 1946 (discharged 23 Jan 1946) at Ft Lewis Wn. Leo's Dad built a room on the side of trlr so I'd have more room.

    Jan 1949 we went to Burley & got snowed in

    1951 moved to Emerald Hunters House E of town

    K&M Born Tues 13 Mar 1951 at Burley Id at Cottage Hospital & delivered by Dr. I was confined to bed for 6 wks - Was given a lovely shower by my friends & neighbors. They each wrote a poem to the twins & they were published in the "Oakley Herald."

    moved to Stenson house 1/2 blk west of the Theatre.

    Richard B Pyne Delivered by Dr. Richard Sutton at Burley Friday 2 Oct 1953 just after we moved to Twin Falls in Sept to 744 2nd Ave W & Leo went to work for Smith Electric.


    ML had Polio Oct 1954 & was down for so long we took her out of school for the rest of the year


    Sept 1955 we moved 315 Washington St North - after I & all kids spent the summer in Portland w/mom while our house was being built.


    First meal in house was in the bsment on Leo's birthday 2 Sept 1955. Mom was w/us for party. It was a month before they got it finished so we could move upstairs.
