OBITUARY - March 25, 1891, Iowa newspaper. Thanks to Sandy C. for sharing this article: Mr. Jacob Harmon died at his residence in Sheridan, Poweshiek county, Iowa, March 20, 1891, aged 79 years. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Lambert and the remains laid to rest in the Sheridan cemetery. The deceased was born in 1812. He came to Iowa in 1851 and settled in Sheridan, being the first settler in the township. In 1836 he was married to Francis Powers. Ten children were born to them, five of whom survive him. He was a member of the M.E. church and lived and died an earnest advocate of the Christian faith. For 37 years he watched the progress of our country and until old age had overtaken him, he was active in everything for the "good of those around him." He was familiarly known as "Grandpa Harmon," and was respected by all who knew him. His sickness was of short duration. A father, grandfather, husband and good citizen has gone from our midst. One by one the old settlers are passing away. His aged companion survives him, but is confined to her bed by sickness.
